There are the breaks we keep low-key, simply so they don't get ridiculously crowded (too fast) and then there are the breaks that are genuine secrets. You might check them for months or even years if they're a distance, getting to them when you can in different conditions to see if they have the potential. Finally the swell/wind/tide combo comes together and a foamy piece of crap turns to a firing, sucky slab of goodness. Pain likely too, but its the goodness that counts. Michael Vogelsanger has done just this and to go with the gallery, here are his words describing the experience:
"I've been checking this spot near <......> in W.A a fair bit lately but with no luck. This wave is fairly fickle and is rarely surfed, so when the tide and conditions lined up me a mate went on a mission to surf it. Yesterday I walked over the hill and was greeted to the wave absolutely unloading on the shallow shelf. It's real heavy and drains hard off the reef, i was more keen to sit on the rocks and shoot but seeing these waves unload i had to get out there. It's just one of those waves.
So I took some photos then we surfed for hours. The secret spot does still exist!"
