Welcome to Rapid Fire, your weekly dose of 8.5 frames a second shot by our top shooters for you to study and learn from. Each week we'll choose a new sequence to display and have some basic info, either from the rider or photographer, about what is going on in these split seconds.
This week we see Jose Marquina launching into a perfect air spin at Black Rock, shot by Lee Kelly. We asked Jose to explain to us what its like to nail a move like this and what his strike rate is like performing these?
"It's all about the wave really out there, you either get the most perfect bowl ever or you get a shit one. It's that simple. You could paddle out Black Rock and pretty much practice any move you wanted it's that perfect. On this day I only got there with an hour or so of light left so it was a bit of a power session," says Jose.
"That actual bowl was just sitting there. From the moment I paddled into it I knew it was going to be a good one. With no real crowd out that day getting a good one was a lot easier than normal. I hit it pretty fast which helped me get a quick rotation in and the landing was not perfect but I managed to ride out of it still."
And when we asked him about his strike rate, Jose said "Again it's all about if you can get a good one off the crowd. Nailing a good air spin out there is one of my favourite moves. Though I think Alex Bunting did a bigger one on the next wave after that? I can remember paddling out thinking he had just shown me up!"
