You have ridden more waves out here than anyone when you take off what is going through your head? Do you know what your going to be looking to do before or is a second by second thing when your actually riding?
When I take off on a wave at Black Rock my first emotion would have to be excitement and joy! When you take off at Black Rock you're looking down the barrel of one of the most perfect waves you could ride. On the good ones - which I try and get - you can see the first section dropping out with the bowl right at the end so you can usually determine what you're going to do from the take off. I think it's one of the closest waves you could surf to a skate bowl. I love getting a combo out there, like a tube to air, or an air to another move or something.
With this wave you ride a nice tube and launch a clean backflip, looking back at these images is there anything you could of done better or tried different?
With this particular wave I would say that there isn't that much more I could have done and would have to say I'm pretty satisfied as to how I rode it. The end sections didn't wrap quite hard enough to do much else off, about the only other option would have been a long drawn out cutback reverse but looking at the images the foam ball would have dusted me anyway.
Whats the ultimate combo for you out there?
Sometimes when I'm in a creative mood and had a heap of waves I try and utilize all of the sections of the wave including the rarely used first/takeoff section but it's pretty rare that you get enough waves out there to open up and flare. The ultimate wave for me out there is a spin into the tube or roll off the first section, a long running tube and an air forward out. It's pretty hard to do but can be done. I think that's the most challenging thing about Black Rock, is trying to surf it originally.
