Two time winner Ben Player is no stranger to the island challenge having competed in 8 events and was even lucky enough to compete in the first event in 1997. Ben's favorite rider to look up to as a young gun was Matt Percy and an image of Ross Hawke form Riptide issue 1 sticks out in his mind as a classic photo which sums up Shark Island perfectly.

Ben's training for the event is pretty basic, Surf the East Coast as much as possible including Shark Island. If he could plan his winning wave it would go a little like this, 4-8ft range and a East South East swell, take off on the outside, drop the leg and drive through the barrell, gaining momentum as the wave builds in strength. Get spat out and do an air move off the wobble on surge.

For Ben this contest is the ultimate in competitive bodyboarding and once someone told him that he could not ever win the Island Challenge, boy were they wrong! Two times winner and looking for a third Ben is present in the competition by Dunes and Grand Flavour. Can Ben do it?
