One of youngest riders in this years challenge and a relatively newcomer on the scene Jared Houston is the South African secret weapon of sorts. With a final finish at Pipeline this year Jared was earmarked as a competitive threat by many of his peers.

Jared has only ever competed in one previous Shark Island Challenge in which he feels he did not really get to surf to the potential he posses, he has tried to forget this for the last 12 months and is super pumped to be able to redeem himself again this year and hopefully proof himself in solid waves and against the best in the sport.

Jared being the young Springbok he is looks up to Dave Winchester as his island riding inspiration. "Dave's total utilisation of the waves out there make him the most exciting guy to watch so I think about this every time I surf out there" says Houston.

Spending some solid time in Cronulla surfing the Island has given Jared a clear idea of what sort of waves he wants to catch out there in the heat, "A really south Lump on the peak with a 4-6ft east bowl on surge rearing up down the line, take off and draw a high line before carving down into the flats and whipping a tight powerful spin into the pocket, when it hits surge just hold on through the barrel while keeping an eye on the top corner.Aim up and backflip out into the flats, ride out into the channel".

Surfing the actual wave is the best form of training Jared can do it seems plus his usual training schedule. He is also trying to put some extra weight to help tackle the ledges at surge. When we talked to him and asked him if there is one image of Shark Island which sticks out in his mind he says the image which adorns the Shark Island Trophy blows his mind and it would be a total honor to hold this high.
Jared is presented by Turbo Bodyboards.
