The 2002 event was always going to find it hard to live up to the previous year. The competitor list still was stronger then ever and for the first time the event is part of the Super Tour which has just had its first event run at the Box WA, Beau Day won the event. A huge briefing night is thrown on Sydney Harbour on a charter boat and heat draw and contest basics are explained to some regular faces and some new ones also. A young Mitch Rawlins, Jason Hazel and Kelly Hunt enter the competition for the first time.
A week into the contest waiting period a great low pressure forms and the contest is all systems go. The first day is 4-6 ft and offshore early but the wind comes cross shore late into the round. Andrew Lester is on fire and launches a huge invert off surge. Guilherme Tamega is attacking in strong form as is Toby Player and Graham Miller. Defending champ Damian King is surfing smart and looking to try defend his title in the more perfect condition compared to the previous year.
The next day the Island re ignites and is a clean 6ft and groomed by offshore winds all day. The final heats go down in picture perfect Shark Island. Jeff Hubbard is looking to get the edge by hitting some massive section over the shallow reef. Beau day has an amazing second round but may of left his run too late. Tamega gets the solid scores as does Kingy and Toby.
Officials offer a third round if the competitors want one due to the first two being run so quickly. The riders vote to call it a day and presentation is set all winners will be announced the following night. The top eight are called to the stage and by the end of the night the winner for the very first time was an International. Guilherme Tamega got the nod from the judges for his deep tubes and critical maneuvers.
