This will be Damian King's 9th Shark Island Challenge campaign. Former winner in the heaviest conditions the event has event seen in its 13 year history back in 2001. Kingy will this year be out to back up his performances which has included 4th, 3rd, 2nd and of course the pinnacle the 1st place in 2001. Damian is some what of a consent threat always in any sort of competition wether its ping pong of bodyboarding he wants to win always.
Kingy broke onto the scene in the glory days of Shark Island when by far it was claimed as one of the heaviest waves in the world. Totally saturated through out all magazine world wide it was hard not to be influenced by the wave and the people riding them.
For Damian, Ross Hawke's tube style in the late 80's was a starting point which taught him about control and style in heavy waves.
This then grew into looking at riders like Nathan Purcell and ended with looking at his fellow competitor Andrew Lester for the cutting edge of Shark Island riding. In recent times Kingy has launched back into the comp scene with a serious force. For this year he want to try get surf the island as much as possible and start to focus on the right handers up and down the coast.
In 2006 Kingy in his semi final he was knocked clean out by a wave. shaking it off and re entering the lineup he scored a 10 very next wave and won a trip to indo as nailing the best wave of the event. This is all a blur to him still to this day as he claims the head knock was a little more serious then he first thought. One thing that is super clear is the winning feeling and this year with his new board sponsor Turbo presenting him he is keen to feel it again.
If you up for a laugh watch this little clip, Kingy talks about his chances of a win.
