Brenden Newton is the man to back when things get crazy. This guy loves to test his mind, body and skills in the heavy stuff. With only one previous challenge under his belt back in 2005, Brendo will be looking for a big gnarly East swell to maximize the no fear attitude to his advantage. But Brendo is just not all big tubes, he can mix it up with the best when it come to tight controlled maneuvers in shallow heavy waves and that is what the judges will be looking for this year.
Looking up to Adam (Wingnut) Smith as a young rider you can see Brendo has been studying Wingnut's style and wave approach on his old VHS tapes in prep for this years challenge. The new format sits well with Brendo. "This year is likely to be far better than all past years with a cleaner contest format and a heavier international media/spectator following. The 'one day format' and one month waiting period have increased the likelihood of the event having its maximum impact in amazing waves".
There is one photo which sticks out in Brenden's mind to sum up Shark Island perfectly.
"Ryan Ringer Mckinnon, yellow board, flat bottom pit about 4 years ago in the comp, Perfect". Brendo has a strict and simple training schedule to prepare for this years event. Surf the Island as much as possible, keep fit by running, loose some extra kilos and wear in his new quiver from his new sponsor Respect.
When we asked Brendo what his dream wave would be it was clear he had thought about this many times before and his answer was clear and precise. "Stroking and scooping off the back wedge lumb into a six foot tube on the outside, carve down the face upon exit into a tight forward, leveling the rail and riding deep next to the shocky in a six foot flat bottom cave, accelerating out of the barrel a touch early to hit the lip, flipping straight backwards out of the bowl and skipping backward, slowly sliding into the channel".
This year Brenden Newton is presenting in the 2010 Shark Island Challenge by Respect Boards and Agent Eighteen Wetsuits.
