If you have been surfing around the internet over the last few weeks you might of noticed the name Three Conscious attached to some fancy frames captured by the young Nic Barclay. Nic is teaming up with Pierre Costes, Jake Stone, Alex Halsey and Mitch Woodland to make this all happen and we asked Nic for the basic run down on his new project.
Whats the deal with the name? Three Conscious?
The video isn't called Three Conscious. Three Conscious is the production name. I feel the name of the film will develop in time. I termed the production name Three Conscious because, along with myself, two other creative influences helped assemble the structure of the film. Earlier on in the 2010, I moved in with Alex & Mitch, together we discussed in depth how the project would unfold.
What is the basic game plan without giving away all the exciting bits?
So far in 2010, I've been based in Western Australia, with a couple of missions over east. In the latter half I'm going international. First the Canary Islands; I don't think I could make a film about body boarding without showing (arguably) the best destination for it. Beyond that, we aren't really sure...??Then, Hawaii. Hawaii, I hope, will ultimately be the catharsis of the film - the point of competitive climax. Each year everyone goes to Hawaii to push themselves, and I expect this year to be no different. It should be interesting to see the four bring their different styles to one stretch of coastline.
And whats the deal with the 4 riders? How did they make cut over the possible cast of 100's?
I want to create a film that shows how far the youth of the sport is, and has been, progressing. Each of the four riders were selected because they all demonstrate this growing trend in modern bodyboarding.
- Pierre embodies the youthful excitement almost every time he hits the water. Each session he makes the most of the conditions, be it 2 foot or 10, reef or beachie. He's a filmer and photographers dream.
- Mitch is a good friend and before we started out filming I knew I wanted him to be involved in the film. He is the new age bodyboarder; always interested in what the end product is going to look like, be it the video or just one clip. He is always keen to offer creative advice when he isn't surfing, and when he is surfing, he is doing all he can to make sure everything is perfect.
- Stoney is great to work with cause he too, is super productive. I don't think I've had a session this year where we haven't been satisfied. He'll wait & wait till the sun is down if he has too. His ability to make something from nothing is freakish.
- Alex & I have known each other since we were 14. His surfing has progressed and matured unbelievably quickly in the past 2 years. I see him as the most unpredictable rider in the film. What some riders would see as a straight up invert section, he see's differently. I think people see him as the dark horse in the film, and we have embraced it.
How will this project differ form previous productions out there at the moment?
I'm trying to be restrained with respect to the film. I want to focus on these four and do my best in capturing their own progression, both in and out of the water, in a twelve-month period. I don't know of any other recent bodyboarding films that have been quite so intimate in their approach; living with the riders has allowed me to capture every moment.??I think in the past there has been a tendency toward putting anything and everything that looks cool into a video. Proper restraint is necessary to fully fashion a theme or idea; something that run's and dominates the character of the film the whole way through.
