International Bodyboarding Association (IBA) Australasia has ensured that the sport of bodyboarding will continue to boom thanks to collaboration with sporting giant Rebel Sport.
IBA Australasian General Manager Terry McKenna sees the sponsorship as a testament to the marketability of bodyboarding and paints a bright picture for the future of the sport.
"This extension of the multi-year deal will allow us to continue to grow the sport in Australia" said Mckenna
"It's an exciting partnership and we are proud to work with one of the biggest brand names in Australian retail"
The Rebel Sport Pro Tour will attract approximately two thousand competitors competing on the Australasian professional circuit for points and prize money all in a bid to be crowned the annual Pro Tour Champion, the most prestigious accolade in Australian Bodyboarding.
The Tour starts in April in Queensland then tracks across NSW, WA, VIC & SA before winding up in November. Then the RAW Pro Junior series rolls out across the school holidays in Dec /Jan.
This year there is also the added bonus of the Rebel Sport Pro Tour being linked to the IBA world tour rankings.
"The IBA World Tour is now using a two-tiered system with the Grand Slam Series (GSS) hosting the Top 24 riders at extreme locations and the Global Qualifying Series (GQS) acting as feeder tour to the GSS" said McKenna
"Your position on the Rebel Sport Pro Tour will count towards your end of year GQS ranking so positions this year will be hard fought"
Current IBA Australasian Pro tour Champion Dave Winchester rates the series as the best in the world.
"It's a tough series. With guys like Michael Novy, Brad Hughes, Chad Jackson, Tom Rigby and Mitch Rawlins every win is well earned" said Winchester.
Bodyboarding is differentiated in the action sport world by its relatively easy level of access for aspiring participants. The fact that most people can try Bodyboarding at its basic level at a low cost and within a safe environment in the safety of patrolled beaches has appeal.
Then the Top end of bodyboarding is at the cutting edge of action sports with breathtaking high-flying moves across shallow reefs that surfers can only dream of.
