A Nick Ormerod Box Story by Doc

There's always more happening at World Tour events than you get in the official reports, so we're going to see how some of the riders are travelling and what's going on behind the scenes.

First cab off the rank is Nick Ormerod, riding for Empire, Unite, Mob 662 and Ally fins.

Doc: Hey Nick, you've made it through the trials into the main event, how does that feel mate?

Nick: Silly question. Obviously it feels pretty good. Massive relief after having to battle for it... there was a little mishap with getting my entry in by the due date so the organisers couldn't use any of my points from previous comps and put me into a spare spot in the first heat of Round One. I found out the night before the trials and I can't say I was giving out the best vibes that night. I was straight up off it, I felt like throwing a tanty but then just thought fuck it, only one option and that's getting through. It all turned out well.

What's the vibe like there for the main event?

Good. Hoping the waves will cooperate. I know I'm excited. Comps in small shitty waves really don't do it for me but the idea of a well set up comp in good waves is definitely something I like. I'm sure a lot of people are feeling the same.

The accommodation arrangements are always interesting, how is the change from the pit stop on Fisher's couch over here at Tamarama? Where are you staying and who are your housemates?

Haha - Fishers was meant to be two or three nights to catch up and enjoy a little partying for a night or two in Sydney on the way home from Hawaii. It turned into two weeks but it was fun, enjoying the freedom of single life again, not feeling like I have to be somewhere with anyone in particular. Over here I'm staying at a mate's place in Dunsborough. His name's Hummer and I'm here with Joe Clarke, Tim Fowler, Jase Finlay and his girl. Nice place and cool people.

You've only been there a little while, but the lads get into mischief quick, any yarns that have popped up so far?

To be honest there hasn't been much mischief. Two days of a pretty intense comp already and only a day or two till the main event. Ask me in a week after the comps over and we're in Perth for Stoney's premiere. Some of the groms did a ouiji board the other night, that sounded pretty crazy.

Riders are staring to take the training and prep more seriously. Are you noticing there is less partying before these big events and more focus on the job at hand?

Yeah, everyone has their own take on it, but I think most of the fellas tone it down a bit before an event like this. Myself and a few other guys I've been hanging out with all had a fair few nights out for a few weeks but it was to get it out of the system before the waves got good and also for something like this where the vibe totally changes for a week or so coming into the event. Balance is pretty important I think.

What's your take on the forecast and wave conditions for the next few days?

Hmmm tomorrow could be OK. I know the Box can be affected by the swell periods so it could make it pretty funky tomorrow, conditions should be nice though. Saturday and Monday look potentially good. Fingers crossed.

Anything you want to catch us up on before you bail?

Ahhhh, one little thing. The update on the IBA website about the first trials day... it had a quote from me saying "I just thought I'd prove myself worthy with a few good heat wins"... I didn't say that. I'm all for confidence but cockiness is just gay.

Thanks for your time Nick, rip into it!

Cheers bud!
