You'll notice a new module here on the Fluidzone page called "Grass Roots Clubs". These are the local clubs where bodyboarders meet up. More as a social outlet than anything else, the competitive surfing gets thrown into the mix, but the main thing is the camaraderie that is formed between the riders.
At TBC we have 3 older groms on a development program: Phin Gibson, Zac Panaretos and Sam Taucher. Club sponsors Bondi Surf Company, Flipmode Clothing and POD get behind them for this. Herbie at Bondi Surf Co, sorts them with boards, Flipmode with sick threads and POD with killer leashes of the stainless steel buckle kind. Some of the the older lads at Tama have been taking them to South Coast reefs over the last few years, gradually stepping up the heaviness in proportion to their ability over time.
A few weeks ago the lads, along with one of TBC's member photogs Kian Bourke-Steer, cut the umbilical cord and with P plates attached, headed into the desert. Hopefully to return. We made sure the lads treated it like a pro trip - swell and winds had to be giving clean conditions with minimum four foot, or there was no point going. Many thanks to forecaster Craig Brokensha at Swellnet for backing us with solid chart info right to the day they left, which was spot-on.
The day before they arrived an abalone diver was torn apart (RIP) by two (yes two) great whites only a couple hundred metres from where they were going to surf. The lads jumped in and shredded up anyway.
We'll leave you with some words from Kian. Part 2 will have Zac's mind altering penwork to accompany.

The drive down was intense after 22 hrs and only having slept for 2 hrs I was seeing shit on the drive and getting excited whenever we came up to bend,
We scored straight away with 4ft clean waves. Our first night was pretty funny we ended up sleeping in some cattle field with two Frenchies that were driving to Sydney under 60km/h as they had no brakes and had to use the hand brake to slow down.
The second night there we were scared off by the local farmer cruising by every so often and had to pack our tent and bags away in 5 degrees at 9 oclock in the pitch black.
There were a couple funny moments in the trip one that springs to mind is me throwing baked beans on the fire with the lid on and then exploding over Sim and Mont. Rookie error.
All in all the trip was amazing we scored clean 4-6 ft. waves the whole week, for a surt trip it doesn't really get any better then that. The bois were always keen for a laugh and there wasn't one down point for the trip.
Thanks for opportunity boish,
Legends - the great leg spinner Mont, the Sim Son and Gibbo
