The Danarchist writes for us again from the Long Weekend comp frontline. If you missed it, part 1 is here http://www.fluidzone.com/news/1670-dispatch-from-danarchist
Dispatches:
Day two:
The fall out from last night is thus:
One missing presumed.....
One dislocated knee sustained while......
(Fill in the blanks yourself, its more fun that way)
One VERY messy groms room. Its not a pleasant place to occupy, more ashtray than place that you'd what to inhabit. Not that they care as there all in a deep deep slumber.
Two simultaneous games of the tradition annual drinking game "king of beers" had broken out in the corresponding units occupied by team P.S.B.C. Room 301 had played host to "couples corner", Those with wives and girlfriends present.
Next door Mitch Woodland and Dallas held sway over the generation of the bay grommet army, twelve or so strong. It was heart warming to observe the ease of interaction between the groms and the guys that I'm sure occupy some sort of idol status to them, and a testament to the humbleness and character of both Mitch and Dallas.
It was also an interesting sociological experiment to observe.
The groms were all enthusiasm and random comedic brilliance (eat a deeeck) over the more refined and socially aware nature of the couples corner game. Both games degenerated quickly to the lowest common denominator of gutter thought, and both games reached their conclusion at roughly the same time.
Being older and wiser, I'd snuck away to try to rack up some sly sleep to compensate for the night before lack of, when I was rustled awake.
"Oi, do you know how to put a knee back in"
What do you freaking recon?
Off to the hospital we go. Its still cold in Port Macquarie in the middle of the night.
The next morning brings cold, showers and very little movement at the station. Those in the first heats slowly rally. North wall is still 2-3 foot, with more east in both the swell and the wind, and not looking like very much fun. Heats are won and lost on the strength of the ability to find a little flip bowl, or longer wally one to punch some multiple spins and rolls on. Despite all the advancements in hi-fi riding in waves of consequence, comp surfing is still comp surfing in sub-par conditions.
The Port Mac Aussies find a home town rhythm and post four firsts to wrestle back first position, a position they occupy till the close of play. P.S.B.C , in spite of multiple hangover and the fact that it's 90% right-handers scraps into second(Fact: there are no rights in the bay. O.k. there are rights but there shit.)
Its not very pleasant huddling under a gazebo in the cold and rain all day. I crack at around 1.00p.m. A warm bed and a warm wife appeal more than another night of patchy sleep and shenanigans. Time to head north again.
Truth is, the Port Macquarie teams challenge, and grass roots bodyboarding clubs in general are about the friendships and fun that you have between competing. It's the good times you'll remember, not the number on wins you rack up. Its no surprise that Port Macquarie, with its long standing club, has produced so many talented riders, and victories in the Teams Challenge. In the late 90's the Newcastle club won five straight Teams events with a tight knit crew.
After two days and nights spent with the bay boys, it's fairly obvious that there is a real esprit de corps between the different generation of riders from P.S.B.C, forged by the good times and laughs had between the heats. This interaction between experience rider and grommet is a huge part of the reason that so much talent is on its way up in the Port Stephens area.
So that's its sportsfans .........join a Bodyboard club, .................todos somos marcos.
The Danarchist.
