Le Boogie Issue 8 - More Bleed Than a Reef Gash
Quality vision - that what we know we're in for when the condom of plastic is peeled off the fresh LeBoogie issue. Gently curled and carefully inserted into the mailbox, boogers around the planet know this feeling when we see its end jutting out.
Blood & reefs, they go together. Some of us feel if you haven't given the ocean god your spill of blood from a nasty gash on a heavy reef, you aren't initiated as a full bodyboarder yet. There is a strange relationship in us between the joy of being deep in a raging pit, that only a reef gives, and the long, deep, bleeding cuts our skin gets from these. The continually running claret is a quiescent source of pride while it lasts, only because you had a crack at something that wholeheartedly wanted to destroy you - and you don't give a fuck that it did.
Full bleed in printing is where the image runs to the very edges, without the standard borders. It's sexy, it's full, it's uncluttered & it makes the image free and large as hell. First open of Issue 8 gives 5 double page shots of full bleed: Rawlins/Shadbolt, Griz/Collins, Garner/Gurney, Player/Shad, Russell/Tabone. In the final shot prologue, it is stated "It's all about relatability". Yes it is.
Stork aka Mark Thompson is exposed next. His mate Damien Martin is going places and Stork is one of the blokes who helped get Damo noticed. Hard and raw, Stork has grown-up, take a leaf out of his book.
Eppo - what cannot be said about this man that doesn't ring of history and sponge in the marrow of his bones? Eppo's brick and mortar shop is no longer here.... And we grieve that.
He's proudly wearing a UNITE tee, as Joel Taylor wrote recently:
"At this rate we'll be buying our bodyboarding gear from mall surf shops and department stores by Christmas. Don't say we didn't warn you. SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL CORE BODYBOARD STORE!"
Read and inhale the words from a mighty man, learn and become richer. Bodyboarding has. We owe you Eppo.
Surf photography is a harsh world - harshest of the harsh if you want to make a living from it. Le Boogie features six warrior lensmen making their way and surviving thus far. Wall, Davenport, Jackson, Tabone, Dobbin & TBC's own Bannehr all get featured and given a chance to have their say.
Frame Rate - sequences of fury. A regular section in LB that gets the heart pumping as we relate to each step of glory, wanting to dive into each frame and live it.
Ray Collins feature on Jeff Hubbard - let your eyes roll across these pages and do not miss the lensmanship or the riding.
Centrefold - Holly is a stunner. Somewhere in my hard drive I have a photo I took at the LB Christmas party, the last release of the mag before it hit the newsstands with the nude cover, of Holly in silhouette poking her tongue out at her own personal parts projected on the bigscreen. It was a wild night filled with classic moments. Enjoy the sensuality of the nuance of young lovers entwined in black and white.
10 x 10 - Great stories on people from the boog scene. From Backshall to Hadden, you will find out more than you thought some may reveal. Background stories help us to relate. Boogers like to relate, y'know...
Famous People Met and Liked - "The spilling of blood and wine in Margaret River and its surrounds" You don't have to be psychic to know Kingy and his face altering Box wipeout will be in there, along with some other hellmen and their escapades. It wouldn't be complete without a quoted outburst from Kingy. Clarke wanting to fly-kick another bodyboarder in the spine as he hates him so much (with agreement from others) Nick OMG Ormerod lazing in his undies. Tom, Dallas and Novy at a time when they were all on equal points. No stone goes unturned, no mention too trivial or too large. Photos galore.
Open Air Theatre - another much loved section. If airs are your thing, you will fall in eternal love with the displays in open air theatre.
Carnage Cave - Never EVER miss this. Ever.
There is more, much, much more but you will have to raid your local newsstand or make a subscription online at www.leboogie.com to peel open the luscious pages and find what is between the folds. Support those who support what you love.
Bleed like you mean it.
