The Passing of Kyle Burden from a shark attack recently has affected a lot of people. Along with our prayers and wishes for Kyle, we all included his family, whose emotional pain we knew to be beyond our understanding.
At the recent State event in Victoria, a paddle-out was made. Initially planned for Kyle, inclusion was made for Eddie Solomon as well. It has been tragic times for Bodyboarding's finest.
Chris Bagot sent the paddle-out picture through and also included the contact for Danny Bycroft. Danny had been in contact with Kyle's mum, Sharon. Included here is an extract from a heart-wrenching and touching email from Sharon to Danny, along with a journal entry from Kyle's trip to Bali just weeks ago. These are included here with respect & love to Kyle and the entire Burden family and show why we are so proud of our community as bodyboarders.
"I have just read your email and I find it hard to put into words how much it lifted my spirits. As a mother I have been overwhelmed by the support that Kyle has received from his fellow bodyboarders and board riders, and it gives me enormous comfort to know that so many people are reaching out to Kyle's family and friends, and that there are people who have been thinking about him in the days since the attack. I knew he had a passion for bodyboarding, but I had never really appreciated the tight knit community that went with that passion."
Kyle's journal entry:
Padang..the last of the swell has almost faded.....
Mid afternoon with storm clouds on the horizon
living the dream living the dream
conditions have not improved.
I decide to paddle out anyway, one last time
sitting in the line up bobbing around
the clouds come over us and it starts to rain.
The other surfers in the line up leave
and so I sit alone in the ocean in a rainy glass off.
Then like magic
with the reef to myself
Padang lights up one last time.
3-4 foot and barrel after barrel
I pull into tube after tube
worn out from paddling so much.
The word spreads
and it's not long before a group of 5 is paddling out
they arrive and the waves leave.
Content with my success I paddle in
and ride back to Kuta for a beverage or 3.
Kyle Burden, 2011
Peace
