After a dawn training session and heat drills at La Guencha TravelSim Team Australia headed to the township of Galdar for the ISA World Bodyboarding Games opening ceremony.
We are one of 23 nations competing for this championship and will have competition from lesser known bodyboarding countries such as Aruba, Morocco and Ireland! All teams are in great spirits and the opening ceremony impressed upon all of us the unity and bond we all share as bodyboarders regardless of where we come from.
After marching into the town centre proudly waving an Australian flag we contributed sand from Mooloolaba Beach in Queensland to the mixing of the sands ceremony. This large vase of sand from 23 countries around the world was then presented to the mayor of Galdar as a token of our appreciation for hosting this competition in a town that he would like to make "the bodyboarding capital of the world."
George Humpherys was a real favorite with the locals and signed 100s of autographs as well as posing in numerous photos which will no doubt be posters of the walls of the adoring locals.
Competition begins tomorrow with a swell forecast looking better each day into the weekend. There will be some incredible action if El Fronton delivers what has been predicted.
