The "Olympic Games" of Bodyboarding are live and underway at the mythical El Fronton in Galdar on Gran Canaria. Day 1 saw 3-4ft inconsistent wind effected slabs greet the competitors with round one of Open Men's, Junior Men's and DK all completed.
Joey Orme got the Australian campaign off to an amazing start with a flawless display of technical riding on the left hand air bowls. He wowed the judges with huge backflips, ARS's and air forwards leaving his fellow competitors only with enough time to pick their bottom jaw up off their boards and paddle back to shore on the final hooter. On reaching the TravelSim Team Australia base he remarked "it's like my local break Sandals (Sunshine Coast Reef Break) only on steroids!" His heat total of 14.5 was one of the highest of the day.
After a short break on low tide compatriot Lachlan "Creme de la" Cramsie hit the water and certainly lived up to his nickname. He once again took to the small wedgy conditions like only a Sunny Coaster could displaying his full arsenal of backflips, ARSs and super stylish Invert combinations. He easily won his heat moving into the next round a force to be reckoned with.
As conditions worsened due to a strong easterly wind in the afternoon WA's George Humphreys was surprised into a 3rd place by little known French and Chilean competitors. These super agile competition machines will be hard to beat in small conditions. George is now preparing for an all out assault on the repecharge rounds.
Cronulla DK chargers Aaron Glossop moved into the quarter finals with a smooth display of forehand carves and floaters. Practice at his home break Shark Island and Suck Rock have certainly prepared him well for the late drops and steep faces at El Fronton. Rumour has it he even got one of the barrels of the year free surfing the day before this contest started.
Tomorrow morning will see the Worlds best amateur women hit the water with Australia's own Tassie Devil Nicole Fleming fired up to make her mark on this competition.
