The Sumol Nazaré Special Edition is a special event that has a totally different way of looking competition in bodyboarding. First of all it only takes place if the waves are pumping so the 2011 event was postponed to 2012, it was a wise decision the only downside was that invitees like Amaury Lavernhe, Jeff Hubbard or Dudu Pedra from Brazil didn't have the chance to come but the replacements were some of the best bodyboarders. The likes of Aussie Joe Clarke, the Canarian Elliot Morales and some of the standouts of the Special Trials. World champ Pierre Louis Costes after his cleaning of every world title available was the clear favorite to win the comp.
The morning showed us some beautiful pits of 6 to 8 ft A-frames with a little offshore breeze which gave the riders the chance to hit the lip and fly everywhere and to take some tubetime on the hollow waves of the now famous Praia do Norte in Nazaré. In the afternoon the waves were bigger and it was about 10 to 12 ft on the bigger sets.
The Show was on with riders like Joe Clarke landing a great air revo on a left, PLC a huge one also on a left, Elliot Morales tried an early 720 air revo but didn´t stick it, he later made a picture perfect air reverse and busted one of the highest inverts on the final. The foreigners were definitely standouts but the Portuguese chargers were also amazing. Guys like the 19 year sold locals António Cardoso with massive tubetime and high inverts and Dino Carmo charging like it was nothing, the ex-Portuguese champ Tiago Silva with an huge roll on a left that nearly broke his jaw and a giant air roll spin on a left, Jaime Jesus with his air revo to the right as well. These are some of the best stuff we have seen in this comp, this is a bodyboarding event that takes everybody from their locals breaks to behold the magic in Nazaré and this year the comp was held in smaller but more "puntable" waves which took the event to another level of enjoyment to the crowd used to see those crazy guys fighting for their life.
It's refreshing to say that Pierre won this competition fairly without a single backflip, his well known trademark punt.
