"Souls in the Zone" by Doc
Fluidzone is a bodyboarding dedicated website. But what is Fluidzone really about? It's about people, ‘souls' if you like, bringing us together over our passion - riding waves in the ocean. It's immersing ourselves in this salty fluid that drives our lives. Fluidzone is a venue for when we're on land.
Next month is the second anniversary of the rebirth of Fluidzone from Rabi's original concept. We lack ritual to a great degree in our modern lives, so I thought to mark the occasion I'd start a regular little column. It will be about all sorts of things like the insides of bodyboarding, some of the things make this our passion tick, some tech stuff, but especially the people. You may be looking at a screen with pictures and words, but these are the expression of a lot of dedicated hours - photographers in freezing waters waiting hours for that magic shot, riders literally risking their lives scraping into hell pits to reach their heaven. People coding, designing and loading - all so it can all be brought to you. You won't see anyone with a gun to their head. We all do it by choice. It's almost like we can't do anything else. It's a drive, a passion of love.
I won't be selling anything. Fluidzone is funded by Swellnet and is given free reign to whatever is written. We're not beholden to advertisers from the industry. There will be different brands mentioned and people from these brands and labels at times. That's just because I know pretty much everyone in the industry in Australia, and a lot overseas, personally. Mates. I've surfed with them, had beers with them, chatted online with them, spent hours on the phone talking shit, sorting problems out, hooking people up and generally ‘chewing the fat' as they say (there are various attributions to this term, I prefer the one that derives from sailors on their breaks hanging around talking were chewing on salt hardened fat, hence the term).
I have ideas on what will be covered, but what exactly comes out I don't really know yet, plus things will evolve over time. It will be random, informative, maybe even interesting at times, but above all I'll be keeping it real, so it's worth your time to put it up on your screens and have a read.
The waves of the ocean are our passion, our choice to ride a layered sponge into and maybe even out of their depths is what brings us together. Always remember that it's more than just a screen, you're connecting in some way to other like-minded souls. When you hit that moment riding a bodyboard where time stops and all you're aware of is the sea surrounding you and the move you're making at that moment - and nothing else - you are experiencing what sports psychology calls being "In The Zone".
Peace,
Doc
