CRONULLA (Friday 13th July, 2012): The reef break at Sandshoes, Cronulla, was the venue for day 2 of the Emerald NSW Bodyboard State Titles Round 2. Drop Knee opened the day under sunny skies with Seniors, Open Men's and Masters opening their campaigns.
Adam Wright (Warilla), took the highest combined heat total of the day in the senior men's (13 out of a possible 20), in the challenging 3 foot conditions, against the states best Bodyboarders from the Central Coast, South Coast and Mid-North coast of NSW.
"Its epic, this is one of the best comps, there is hardly any paddling, just jump of the back off the rocks and stay away from the sea urchins, ha ha", said Wright of the break at Sandshoes, aptly named because of urchin covered reef.
"I was lucky enough to get a few of the bigger waves that came through, I saw it coming and hesitated but I thought I could play a little and take a few more risks and it paid off", said Wright who is back competing after injury in the last few years.
Getting a sneaky cover up added to the early spin to roll combo and pushed him into first place in his opening heat in the Senior men's. Wright faces Adam Cheers (Forster) in the semis tomorrow, both are competing in the seniors and opens, and FTBA rider Cheers is through to the semis in the Drop Knee also.
Competing in three divisions Cheers has been in fine form in round 2, a barrel in the open men's impressed judges and he took home the VB wave of the day.
Pro Stealth team rider Alex Bunting (Bondi) was on hand to commentate the prestigious titles, where round 1 open men's champion Liam Glass (Ulladulla), made the semi finals along with Slade Napier (Huberts Island).
Napier has been a stand out so far, not dropping a heat the whole competition making the quarter finals in the juniors on day 1 and semis in the open men's which will run tomorrow.
Also doing well on day 2 was Glen Sullivan (Kiama), Thomas Donnelly (Forster), local Matt Menzies who are through to the DK Semis and Harry Sarin (Bayview) in the open men's semi.
Tomorrow will also see all divisions contest the finals and state champions will be crowned for 2012. Call the event hotline 0458 247 212 for confirmed venue by 7:00am, first heat is at 7:45am.
The three day event will be held at Cronulla from Thursday 12th - Saturday 14th July 2012.
