Next update Tues 21/5 5pm.
Previous day's summary:
Small surf has plagued the South Arm over the last few days, with onshore winds creating further problems today.
Forecast period ahead:
A broad, complex low pressure system is developing in the southern Tasman Sea, and it's expected to occupy the region for several days. A small band of gales moving up from the Antarctic ice shelf today is probably the most interesting part of this system (relative to the South Arm) and will provide a solid increase in size on Friday, slightly bigger than was forecast on Tuesday.
Wave heights should reach 4-5ft at exposed beaches (i.e. Clifton) on Friday, and due to the straight southerly swell direction, we should see smaller but much cleaner waves on the points (i.e. 2-3ft) under a gusty southerly breeze.
After Friday, we can expect a steady easing trend over the weekend with lingering onshore winds thanks to the stationary low just to the east of the state (which will unfortunately not extend far enough south to produce new swell for the region).
Tiny conditions will then pad out the first half of next week, with generally light winds.
Looking further ahead and a small cut off low is expected to generate a renewal of swell for the region around Wednesday, but at this stage no great size or quality is expected.
A series of powerful fronts traversing the southern Indian Ocean later this week are expected to generate a sustained period of solid long period swells, which are due to arrive around Friday of next week and continue through the weekend and even the first day or two of the following week.
At this stage it looks like the resulting swell direction will have quite a lot of west in it, however the sheer scope and magnitude of this weather progression should still result in some good waves within the South Arm. More on this in next Tuesday's update.
